You may be familiar with four vital signs that are routinely measured by health care providers:
Height
Weight
Pulse rate
Blood pressure

What you may not know is that there’s a growing interest among health care professionals to include exercise as a fifth vital sign. You can read about that, along with some great insight into recent medical research, in this article at CNN today.

Increasingly, doctors are asking about, and recording their patients’ exercise activity, as part of their medical records. CNN reports it’s a standard recommendation by health care providers today that people get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate intensity exercise. That’s 30 minutes five days a week, if you’re inclined to schedule it that way, but the increments of time can be broken up as you choose, as long as the 150 minutes are met.

One great tip from the article, regarding what type of exercise is best: “The ideal form of exercise is something that you’ll actually do.” This means finding something that you actually enjoy, so you’ll be more likely to stick with it as a welcome part of your lifestyle.

With spring arriving, and a feeling of new beginnings in the air all around us, there’s no better time to find out what type of exercise makes you happiest. Or, if you already know which best suits you, it’s a great time to be inspired to get out and do it!

We at Body for the Ages wish you a happy spring, and a happy and healthy exercise routine!
